Reuters: London, England: Once the last prestigious tennis tournament of 2015, the World Tour Finals in London, comes to a close, 2015 triple Slam winner, Novak Djokovic and Roland Garros winner, Stan Wawrinka plan to vacation together in the idyllic island of Corsica. Both have often been seen practicing together before and during big tournaments and have a very amicable relationship on and off court, despite the Swiss star depriving the Serb sensation from an unfathomable 4th Slam in Paris this Spring. Djokovic and Wawrinka shared a surprisingly warm embrace after their Roland Garros match, and their friendship off court has blossomed into one of the nicer sporting friendship stories of an otherwise isolated and competitive game.
Djokovic’s father, Srdjan reported to InSerbia News that Djokovic’s wife Jelena, son, Stefan and him and his wife would join their son for a December getaway on the picturesque Italian island. He was also pleased that his son, Novak invited now close friend, Wawrinka. “I think it’s great that two players who’ve developed such a fierce rivalry over the years, can be friends off-court,” says Srdjan, “and we’re delighted to have Stan join us for a relaxing holiday. There are reports Wawrinka may bring his girlfriend, Donna Vekic, also a tennis player on the WTA.
In related news, Roger Federer is not invited to Djokovic’s getaway. Swiss gossip news site, Jalopnik.com, report that the Swiss tennis legend was hoping Wawrinka would join him for a vacation in Mallorca. Wawrinka reportedly told his compatriot: “Roger, frankly your wife gets on my nerves, and you talk too much about yourself. Novak’s invited me already, so just get over it.” Federer denies having invited Wawrinka, but Wawrinka claims he’s received over 23 voicemails and 55 text messages from an anonymous person that he suspects may be Federer. “It’s kind of obsessive,” says Wawrinka, “and the person keeps saying that it’s killing him inside that he doesn’t want to hang out with him.” Djokovic offered no insight into the matter, other than: “Look, Stan is a Man who can make decisions for himself. He’s my friend and he chose to hang out with me. I don’t know if Federer invited him first, or whether that’s even true, but Stan accepted my invitation. I’ll let them settle this dispute. I’d rather not get involved.”
Djokovic could face Wawrinka in a possibly intriguing semifinal or Final match-up in London this coming week.
